One of the earliest\u00a0developments in handling\u00a0came from Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin, who commissioned construction of floating hangars (shown at left below, Manzell #1 for LZ-1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1106 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH2-300x98.jpg\" alt=\"gh2\" width=\"380\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH2-300x98.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH2.jpg 731w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 85vw, 380px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Used for several ships, the hangars could weathervane so the ship and hangar were automatically aligned for egress. Tide and current were not so much a problem on the Lake of Constance but the line-handling boats were somewhat difficult to coordinate. The concept was abandoned and the hangar moved ashore, but the need to align with the wind remained.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1107 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH3-300x74.jpg\" alt=\"gh3\" width=\"629\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH3-300x74.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH3-1024x254.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH3-1200x298.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH3.jpg 1881w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 85vw, 629px\" \/>Years later the American Navy got around to copying the floating hangar concept. From the few flights and handling of Pensacola\u2019s Dirigible, Non-Rigid #1 and \u201cDN-3\u201d Americans learned the same lessons. \u00a0The hangar was moved ashore. Note the many roof vents, to insure a hydrogen filled non-rigid could be ripped safely inside.)<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1112 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH4-300x53.jpg\" alt=\"gh4\" width=\"662\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH4-300x53.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH4-1024x181.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH4-1200x212.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 662px) 85vw, 662px\" \/>The ability to weathervane so ship and shed were aligned with the wind was so desirable a complex rotating shed was constructed near Berlin (1910 photo, above left).\u00a0 This idea evolved into a twin rotating shed during WWI (above, center) and eventually a plan to build a very large rotating shed to connect hangars at what was supposed to become\u00a0the main Zeppelin hub in Frankfurt.\u00a0 However, the method for moving rigid airships in and out of fixed hangars was at first dependent on large numbers of handlers\u2026 and calm conditions.\u00a0On USS <em>Shenandoah\u2019s<\/em> first cross-country trip, the airship was held on the St. Louis Air Races grounds by crews alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The British were the first to recognize the airship need not be docked every time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1113 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH5-300x97.jpg\" alt=\"gh5\" width=\"696\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH5-300x97.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH5-1024x332.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH5-1200x389.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/GH5.jpg 1268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 85vw, 696px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Engineering a male\/female nose \u201cplumb bob\u201d \/ \u201cflower pot\u201d mating setup, they developed the tower (or \u201chigh\u201d) mast with good result (R.33 shown at extreme left). The Americans copied the idea.<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=3429\">A standard mast and site was developed (supporting ZR-1 at North Island, California, center photo) which was duplicated in several locations, eventually evolving into the &#8220;Class B&#8221; mooring bases.<\/a><\/span> Access to the ship involved getting to the top of the mast and stepping from the platform to the bow door (photo).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3477\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Z3-BOWDOOR-1-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Z3-BOWDOOR-1-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Z3-BOWDOOR-1-1024x675.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Z3-BOWDOOR-1.jpg 1081w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The mast plan evolved into heavier, permanent structures plumbed with gasoline, water ballast and lifting gas lines, providing shore power, and equipped with monstrously powerful winches. The Army and Navy built expensive tower masts at Scott Field, Illinois and Lakehurst, New Jersey, respectively. The British built elevator-equipped tower masts and were well on the way placing them in major cities <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=110\">throughout the Empire<\/a>.<\/span> Henry Ford even built one of his own, masting the Army RS-1 and Navy ZR-3 (extreme right, above).\u00a0 A tower mast was planned in for a building in Chicago and one was built atop the new Empire State Building (shown under construction, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\">home page<\/a><\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1116 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/LA-Patoka-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"la-patoka\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/LA-Patoka-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/LA-Patoka.jpg 633w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>The former oiler USS <i>Patoka<\/i> was the ultimate mobile support base in protected harbors,\u00a0 providing all airship needs, including a renewable\u00a0supply of hydrogen via an onboard generator. The generator\u00a0was never used, though most of <i>Patoka\u2019s <\/i>onboard Texas helium was once expended refilling USS <i>Akron<\/i> following a<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=327\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bungled California mooring<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> Most of the known footage of USS <em>Patoka&#8217;s<\/em> LTA \u00a0operations are included in our raw footage <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/airshiphistory.com\/wp\/uss-los-angeles-zr-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DVD &#8220;USS Los Angeles&#8221;<\/a><\/span>and the second and third chapters of our<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/airshiphistory.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Series-Intro.wmv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Airship History Series.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While impressive looking, \u00a0while at the tower masts provisions that could not be piped had to be hand carried through the bow hatch. The ship had to be \u201cflown\u201d at the mast to prevent too many reoccurrences of dipping the lower fin into the surface. Worse, NAS Lakehurst\u2019s tower mast was the scene of an unusual combination of air currents that once rotated, spun and tilted to make the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/airshiphistory.com\/wp\/snafu-the-strange-story-of-the-american-airship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ZR-3 appear to stand on its nose<\/a><\/span>, with minor damage to the cover from falling objects punching through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1118 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/3-stub-300x114.jpg\" alt=\"3-stub\" width=\"645\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/3-stub-300x114.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/3-stub-1024x390.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/3-stub-1200x457.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 85vw, 645px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lakehurst engineers introduced various constructions of shorter \u201cstub\u201d masts that eliminated many of the tower\u2019s problems. (For ZR-3, they also built ground reinforcement girderwork for the center engine car to carry the loads associated with adding their \u201ctaxi\u201d wheel, seen here at the &#8220;mooring out&#8221; circle, a tamped-down dirt track for the wheel to ride while moored out.)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">During the ZR-3&#8217;s extended deployment to the Caribbean in 1928, she participated in exercises centering around the Panama Canal. The Los Angeles used the Army&#8217;s France Field (photo), since Naval Air Station Coco Solo, with its standard steel hangar for non-rigids, did not have enough cleared area to accommodate the rigid airship.\u00a0 A simple weighted dolly brought in from Lakehurst (photo) was used to discourage kiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3412\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ZR-3-Panama-wp-300x96.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"622\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ZR-3-Panama-wp-300x96.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ZR-3-Panama-wp-1024x328.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ZR-3-Panama-wp-1200x384.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ZR-3-Panama-wp.jpg 1415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 622px) 85vw, 622px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though it is hard to verify with the grainy photos available, the literature supports the belief it was the San Diego mast that was dismantled and re-engineered to a lowered height at Mines Field, Los Angeles, California, for the landing of the <em>Graf Zeppelin<\/em> during its 1929 world flight (photo).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3474 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Graf-at-LA-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Graf-at-LA-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Graf-at-LA-744x1024.jpg 744w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Graf-at-LA.jpg 961w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 85vw, 218px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Later, a sectional steel mast, shipped from Lakehurst, was used by the ZR-3 at the September 1929 National Air Races in Cleveland. (The mast served as the final pylon for the air races.) No other particular ground improvements appear to have been done at these temporary sites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The only way to reduce the cost of handling large rigids was by cutting back on required manpower. Lakehurst again pioneered the mobile mooring mast, first one towed by a WWI tank, to manage the bow while a reduced number of men could swing the stern about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1143 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mobile-300x84.jpg\" alt=\"mobile\" width=\"711\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mobile-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mobile-1024x286.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mobile-1200x336.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 711px) 85vw, 711px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rails cast in the hangar floor were extended outward to accommodate side trolley cars that gently held main frames in line as the ship egressed the sill (diagram). The stern could weathervane by pushing the stern \u00a0car along the track, but the trolley wheels prevented its lifting upward. \u00a0Our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/airshiphistory.com\/wp\/airship-handling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DVD &#8220;Airship Handling&#8221;<\/a><\/span> begins with the earliest known footage of this evolution, and most of the mast footage available is included on our silent footage compilation DVD, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/airshiphistory.com\/wp\/uss-los-angeles-zr-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;USS Los Angeles.&#8221;<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Photos also show what appears to be a very tall portable mini-mooring mast in photos from the 1930s; this mounted an anemometer at such a height as to check winds to be encountered around the ship&#8217;s upper keel and top stabilizer fin.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1149\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akron-300x64.jpg\" alt=\"akron\" width=\"778\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akron-300x64.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akron-1024x219.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akron-1200x257.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Akron.jpg 2008w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 778px) 85vw, 778px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With the ZRS contract, Goodyear-Zeppelin beefed up with a non-adjustable design. Their version of a tripod mast was <span style=\"text-align: left; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: 'Noto Serif'; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; word-spacing: 0px; display: inline !important; white-space: normal; cursor: text; orphans: 2; float: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;\">self-propelled <\/span>. Their much heavier side winch cars\u00a0 (photo, left) clamped over the Airdock&#8217;s docking rails. (Bolster is seen here much later, after reaching Flag rank.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An 89-ton &#8220;stern beam&#8221; (photo) was constructed and equipped with dual sets of railroad wheels. One set was aligned with the hangar&#8217;s original docking rails. Straight in or out of the hangar, &#8220;Spreader gear,&#8221; a system of wheeled pipes connecting mast and beam (diagram right of photo), prevented the flying-weight airship from carrying the beam&#8217;s load when transiting from hangar to circle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1146 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Lakehurst-300x77.jpg\" alt=\"lakehurst\" width=\"604\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Lakehurst-300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Lakehurst-1024x264.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Lakehurst-1200x310.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 85vw, 604px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once over the circle, a second set of wheels, at 90 degrees to the first, built with the same arc as the mooring circle, were lowered as the first set was retracted. The beam then rode that track to allow the tethered tail to be aligned with either the hangar or the wind. \u00a0The massive beam was pulled against even the strongest winds by a specially built 132-ton locomotive, also visible in the photo. \u00a0Once aligned with the wind, the bridles securing the tail to the beam were removed, the tail floated upwards and the beam pulled clear. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If necessary the taxi wheel could be attached, during the transit to the mooring-out circle. Depending on mission status at that point, either the riding-out car, or a taxi wheel, or the flight bumper bag could be attached to the lower fin.\u00a0 These and other details are included in James Shock&#8217;s book, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/airshiphistory.com\/wp\/american-airship-bases-and-facilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Airship Bases and Facilities<\/a>.<\/span>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1151 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Extended-246x300.jpg\" alt=\"extended\" width=\"246\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Extended-246x300.jpg 246w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Extended.jpg 827w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 246px) 85vw, 246px\" \/>The largest and most advanced mobile tripod mast was finished at Lakehurst after <em>Macon<\/em> left for California. \u00a0The new Wellman mast was\u00a080 feet on a side, 75-feet tall and was powered by an 8-cylinder engine. \u00a0The mast could travel both a straight line or a circular path. Its huge simultaneously-extending sections could rise to 160 feet and its powerful winch was rated to pull the largest airships&#8217; mooring spindle into its cup. Never photographed as being used for mooring so extended, its theory supported the American penchant for the so called \u201chigh\u201d landing or \u201cflying moor\u201d harking back to the tower mast days. Since rigid\u00a0airships at the time had no wheels and would probably be arriving on the light side, this technique was thought to be safer for the ship. \u00a0(The real answer, already proven with non-rigids, was adding wheels to the airship.)<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1155 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/5-high-tail-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"5-high-tail\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/5-high-tail-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/5-high-tail-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/5-high-tail-1200x799.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/5-high-tail.jpg 1418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>When <em>Macon<\/em> arrived at Sunnyvale\/Mountain view, the complete system of telescoping Wellman mast, stern beam and spreader gear had been duplicated and was waiting for her. Since the new hangar was aligned with the prevailing winds, there was no need for a second circle; <em>Macon<\/em> would land and take off from the railroad circle fairly close to the hangar. The photo here shows a &#8220;flying moor&#8221; in final stages. Off-duty watch\u00a0and water ballast was sent forward until the spindle was locked in the cup, then shifted aft until the tail lines could be grabbed by the line handlers and the tail brought safely onto the riding out car or stern beam. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The literature discusses the idea of an experimental stern mooring mast, and the idea reached the drawing stage; however, the idea was not pursued further before <em>Macon<\/em> was lost.\u00a0 (The stern mast idea was still alive with the Germans in the <a href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=1958\">closing days of LZ-130 operations<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v_H16LswDU8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=919\">&#8220;<em>Macon<\/em> post-mortem&#8221; report<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">specified the late practices which allowed faster operations with less manpower and margin for error. These included launching the stern directly from the beam, and landing the stern directly to the beam, without the intermediate step of using the riding-out car. This utilized a new type quick-release to supplement the four hold-down clamps remaining. It suggested leaving the ship on the mast-spreader gear-beam system the entire time it was on the ground and in the hangar, using their fore and aft weighing-off scales to determine static condition at any time. The report called out the Sunnyvale-developed system of &#8220;capstan yaw guy winches mounted on circular track mounted on the base of the telescopic mooring mast to replace man-power on the yaw guys.&#8221; Also seen in the film, &#8220;use of small hand-car type of locomotives for shifting the riding-out cars on the circular and straightaway tracks before, during and after the mooring operations.&#8221; The report suggested retirement of the toggle-equipped spider lines in favor of a single rope with &#8216;monkey fist&#8217; knots every six feet. It also\u00a0emphasized better training, communication and signaling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3862 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/zeppelin-book_0019-Copy-Copy-Copy-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/zeppelin-book_0019-Copy-Copy-Copy-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/zeppelin-book_0019-Copy-Copy-Copy.jpg 873w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>The Germans had far much more experience in handling. (These photos show a radio-coordinator and the ground handling chief.) <span style=\"color: #000000;\">In support of the <em>Graf Zeppelin&#8217;s<\/em> globe-trotting, the DELAG used fixed stub masts and mooring circles at various locations. (The mast has been restored today.) There was international agreement on the dimensions of the airship&#8217;s mooring spindle so that any ship might take to a mast any where, but the Germans saw the American Wellman mast and stern beam as massive overkill. For their larger ships the DELAG eventually developed their own lighter mobile masts (photo) which used the docking rails for support. When their Santa Cruz mast wire failed during LZ-129\u2019s first South American docking, the ship\u2019s engines had to be used to help push the ship in the hangar. Sadly, this was not the only handling hiccup made by the masters of the rigid airship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1147 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/German-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"german\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/German-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/German-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/German-1200x672.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/German.jpg 1830w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a hurry to get\u00a0a propaganda flight underway on schedule the gusty morning of the 26th of March, 1936, with sister <em>Graf<\/em> awaiting in the sky above, an over the protest of Dr. Eckener, Captain Lehmann ordered the rollout for a difficult downwind takeoff. \u00a0The cable parted, the car\u00a0crew could not hold him and LZ-129&#8217;s bow rose fourteen degrees, smashing the lower vertical fin&#8217;s aft tip and rudder into the ground. \u00a0Recovering after a short free ballooning experience, the ship was brought back and landed safely. The bottom six feet of the lower rudder was cut away, the fin tip faired in and the whole mess was sewn up to permit <em>Hindenburg<\/em> to depart on a three-day propaganda flight. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2380 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/2017-03-04-GF-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/2017-03-04-GF-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/2017-03-04-GF.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>Scant photos of the damaged surface\u00a0exist since cameras were quickly rounded up on the ground.\u00a0 This photo showing the damage came from the National Museum of Naval Aviation.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=1294\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">US Navy&#8217;s agreement with the DELAG<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was extended for the new LZ-129, Zeppelin Captain Ernst Lehmann told the first USN liaison reaching Germany, LCDR Scott Peck, that the Germans had no intention of doing a \u201cflying moor\u201d with the LZ-129. \u00a0One can only imagine the chaos of crashing dinnerware and sliding passengers if the liner adopted the American&#8217;s tail-raising technique. Instead, beginning with his first visit on May 9th 1936, <em>Hindenburg<\/em> came in just over the trees, dropped his lines, and was walked and winched up to the Wellman mast. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3303 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/SKM_C364e18062119110_0003-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/SKM_C364e18062119110_0003-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/SKM_C364e18062119110_0003-1024x821.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/SKM_C364e18062119110_0003-1200x962.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/> (This newspaper photo from the first landing had been retouched to emphasize the mooring cable being winched to the Wellman mast.) This was practical because LZ-129 was the first rigid to have&#8230; wheels! The Germans said landing gear was a revolution in ground handling: approaching with the ship a bit heavy made for much easier &#8211; and safer &#8211; mastings.\u00a0 Passenger Roger Plikington described, &#8221; Only when we were about 30 feet from the ground was the fall checked by releasing a shower of water. We landed on the single wheel beneath the gondola with a single bump. The ground crew hauled the ship toward the mast and shackled it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was one account of a modified, likely even-keel &#8220;high&#8221; landing was attempted during the 1936 season, possibly the 4th visit, at which time the newsreel cameras seem to have lost interest. If true, this was in clear, if windy weather, nothing like an electrically-rich thunderstorm. In this photo the\u00a0massive fin sits atop Hangar #1&#8217;s individual-paver &#8220;brick&#8221; floor with the disconnected beam nearby. The ship was only docked there twice, facing a different direction\u00a0each time.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It proved far more practical to simply moor out, servicing the ship for turnaround while on the Wellman mast. The mooring circle&#8217;s rails were adapted and a new trolley car built, featuring a <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1168 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/129-trolley-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"129-trolley\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/129-trolley-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/129-trolley.jpg 885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>miniature &#8220;plumb bob&#8221; and &#8220;flower pot&#8221; copied from the mast. Platforms were lowered from the ship to take up drums of lubrication oil for hand pumping aboard. (more detail is given on the page<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=1294\">US Navy and the <em>Hindenburg<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unfortunately the nasty weather of May 6th, 1937, lead to the Americans recommending the landing technique the Germans said they would never do.\u00a0 In Eugen Bentele\u2019s memoir (\u201cThe Story of a Zeppelin Mechanic, My Flights 1931-1938\u201d) he recalls wondering \u201cWhy don\u2019t we land?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That night, the so-called \u201chigh landing\u201d was not familiar to most involved. (Per the testimony of second watch officer Heinrich Bauer, their <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1360 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/129-track-in-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"129-track-in\" width=\"217\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/129-track-in-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/129-track-in.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 85vw, 217px\" \/>lowest altitude was 90 meters\u2014about 295 feet). Likewise ground crew members Bob Buchanan and Frank Ward told interviewers that they were very surprised the <i>Hindenburg<\/i> came in so high.\u00a0The ground crew were used to the Zeppelin coming in just over the trees, then dropping the lines for them to grab. However, in what is constantly mis-identified as the <\/span><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><a style=\"color: #33cccc;\" href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=1381\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Hindenburg explosion,&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">this decision to honor the host&#8217;s request proved to be a key link in a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=1381\">very complex accident chain.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2076 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/zz-Farbbild-03-Copy-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/zz-Farbbild-03-Copy-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/zz-Farbbild-03-Copy-801x1024.jpg 801w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/zz-Farbbild-03-Copy.jpg 931w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 85vw, 235px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The last rigid airship&#8217;s operations were conducted from mast-equipped facilities &#8211; Friedrichshafen, \u00a0L\u00f6wental and Frankfurt. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=1420\">Improvements\u00a0to the LZ-130&#8217;s covering<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and electrical bonding insured another fabric fire was impossible, but electrical expert Professor Dickemann and the &#8220;Donnerwagen&#8221; still made checks of atmospheric electrical activity during evolutions. Improving upon proven ground handling techniques, in early 1939 the Germans were developing an aft windlass which looked to decrease the number of men required for handling.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2080 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/3w-a58072914-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/3w-a58072914-244x300.jpg 244w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/3w-a58072914-832x1024.jpg 832w, https:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/3w-a58072914.jpg 905w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 262px) 85vw, 262px\" \/>When <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/zrsthemovie.com\/?page_id=1491\">WWII began and the last rigid airships were dismantled<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">handling of non-rigid airships at first seemed frozen at\u00a0the level of development of the mobile mooring and &#8220;stick&#8221; masts of old. Scores of men were employed to handle lines and manage cars and tails. This continued postwar; as airships increased in displacement, masts were also enlarged, but the number of ground handlers did not decrease. Finally, in the closing years of the US Navy airship program, winch-equipped tractors &#8211; &#8220;mechanical mules&#8221; &#8211; were developed. Reducing the number of troops needed from dozens to only seven, even the largest blimps &#8211; the 1.5 mil cu ft ZPG-3W &#8211; could be undocked and launched, recovered and docked with less than a dozen men. The type V mobile mast (photo) was the ultimate anchor, height-adjustable and APU equipped.
